REALTORS® LEGISLATIVE MEETINGS & TRADE EXPO  MAY 13-18, 2019  WASHINGTON, DC

Regulatory Issues Forum

Description

After the financial crisis in the American housing market left Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the Government Sponsored Enterprises or GSEs) in financial trouble, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) moved to place the GSEs into conservatorship. Today, more than a decade later, the financial crisis is long over, but the GSEs remain in conservatorship.  During the Regulatory Issues Forum, Mark Calabria, the new Director of FHFA, will discuss his plans for the future of the agency and its oversight of the GSEs.  Bethany McLean, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and author of the book “Shaky Ground: The Strange Saga of the US Mortgage Giants,” will moderate a discussion to explore ways that the GSEs can be reformed to effectively serve the housing market and protect taxpayers going forward.
